What Dreams Become
New Single!
The Story of the Song
“What Dreams Become” was recorded as a long-distance collaboration with musicians Ed Willet (cello) and Álvaro Benavides (bass) and producer Bruce Kaphan. Everything else you hear was performed by Yazmin herself: keyboards and vocals as well as the zany, found-sound percussion tracks.
“I wrote this back when I was in music school struggling with the reality of pursuing one’s dream in a society that tries so hard to fit us into a box. Sometimes the act of simply surviving felt so soul-crushing that I wasn’t sure my music was enough to get me through. In that desperation I asked myself ‘is this what dreams become?’ I think the honesty of that question has endured through the years, even though now I’m grateful to find that there was so much more on the other side of that suffering. This song is an offering to anyone out there struggling in a similar way.” – Yazmin

The Story of the Song
My dad died on March 19th after a long battle with cancer. Anyone who saw me perform knows that he was my musical partner for many years. I had the honor of receiving the inspiration for this song and sharing it with him before he passed and it’s been a big part of my path to healing and reconnection ever since. Everyone who added their creativity along the way has expanded on that. My hope is that it can be of some small benefit to anyone who is suffering and dealing with grief right now. I know there are so many. This song goes out most especially to anyone who is without their father today. We have so much that needs healing in our world: racism, violence, gender inequality, discrimination, substance abuse, Covid-19, the environment. We need to get our hands dirty and work together to dismantle this system that is leaving so many suffering in the shadows. And then work together to rebuild something new, based on listening to one another, lifting up the voices of people of color, and creating true equity for all. I know a song can’t change these things, but it was born as a prayer and I send it into the world with the same sentiment. May we all find peace and healing in this difficult, precious moment. May we all take the actions necessary to create a better future. My friend Curtis who is from the Menominee Nation reminded me a few weeks before my dad passed that in Native American tradition they do not say someone is dying, instead they say they are going home. It’s with deep humility that I want to extend my gratitude to him and to indigenous wisdom for being a part of my inspiration. Half of all proceeds from the sale of this song on my website (including any additional donation you wish to give) will go directly to the Dave Gallup Foundation (www.davegallupfoundation.org), a safe environment for people in recovery from drugs and alcohol throughout the Midwest, where my friend Curtis works.
